BEND, Ore., Oct. 15 (Nationwide Times) — A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, left multiple victims, including children, and the suspect dead on Oct. 15, Bend Police said.
CNN reported that three children and an adult were killed and that the shooter was a 16-year-old male, citing unnamed law enforcement sources. CBS News reported at least three children and an adult killed, also citing unnamed law enforcement sources.
Police had not confirmed that toll or the suspect’s age. The New York Post reported, citing sources, that the adult was believed to be a teacher. The Associated Press reported five deaths, citing two law enforcement officials, without clarity on whether that included the shooter.
Police said the first call, at about 12:59 p.m., reported someone shooting into a car. Within a minute, Deschutes County Dispatch received calls reporting someone had entered the school and begun shooting. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. and shortly afterward reported the suspect had been shot and killed.
“We don’t have confirmation yet who shot the suspect. It may have been a bystander,” Bend Police communications manager Sheila Miller said.
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said a bystander killed the shooter. CBS News also reported that account, citing unnamed law enforcement sources.
Fox News reported, citing unnamed federal law enforcement sources, that the suspect had a shotgun and was killed by an armed bystander with a concealed-carry permit. One source said the bystander “definitely prevented more deaths.”
USA TODAY reported, citing an unnamed law enforcement source, that the bystander legally carried a concealed weapon and followed the shooter.
Police said at least two people were taken to St. Charles Bend; their conditions were unknown. USA TODAY’s source described a child and an adult receiving life-saving measures, their conditions touch-and-go. The Post reported two additional children injured.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was assisting the investigation.
Miller said the school had 400 to 450 students and more than 40 staff. Bend-La Pine School District said law enforcement escorted students to a separate family-reunification site. It canceled classes, activities and athletic events for Friday, Oct. 16.
CNN’s analysis counted this as the 36th shooting on K–12 school grounds in 2026, using events reported by the Gun Violence Archive, Education Week and Everytown for Gun Safety.
