NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND, June 16 (World Daily Times) — A Farne Islands sightseeing trip off Northumberland turned into a rescue mission Sunday when crew from Serenity Farne Island Boat Tours found a dog adrift in an inflatable kayak in the North Sea.

Serenity said skipper Jimmy Reid heard a Coastguard call at about 3:30 p.m. while taking visitors toward Inner Farne. After dropping passengers, Reid and crew member Aaron Fordy joined the search and later located the dog, Bruce, offshore near Bamburgh Beach.

According to Reid and the boat operator, Bruce had been in a kayak that broke loose near the beach and was carried out by strong wind. Reid said the Coastguard alerted nearby boats to watch for the kayak, and Seahouses RNLI also took part in the search.

When Serenity reached the kayak, the crew initially could not see Bruce, according to the crew’s account. Bruce then appeared, slipped from his harness into the water during the recovery and was pulled aboard, the crew said.

The crew wrapped Bruce in towels and took him to Seahouses Harbour, where he was reunited with his owner, according to Serenity and local responders.

The rescue interrupted one of the sightseeing trips that carry visitors around the Farne Islands and to Inner Farne, a stop Serenity said it had been making when the Coastguard alert came in.
