WASHINGTON, July 7 (DC Times Online) — House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer on Monday brushed off a Democratic report on President Donald Trump’s America 250 celebration, saying Democrats would rather Trump and the country fail than mark the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Comer, a Kentucky Republican, made the comments on Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show after House Democrats on the Natural Resources Committee released a 55-page interim report led by Rep. Jared Huffman of California, the panel’s top Democrat. The report accused Trump allies of turning the semiquincentennial into a partisan spectacle tied to Trump’s political and religious agenda.

The Democratic report, as described by CNN, said donors who were supposed to support the bipartisan America250 nonprofit were allegedly redirected, without their knowledge, to Freedom 250, a separate nonprofit linked to Trump-backed events. It also said Trump allies tried to sideline America250 while putting Trump at the center of the celebration and selling access to him in exchange for donations.

Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez rejected the allegations, calling them “categorically false.” Comer said on Fox that Democrats would “investigate and harass Donald Trump” if they won the House majority, and he described their reaction to the America 250 effort as “anti-American.”
