ATHENS, Greece, July 21 (World Daily Times) — Greek police detained a 60-year-old man after a knife attack near the Acropolis in Athens injured a Greek-American couple on July 21, authorities said.

The Hellenic Police said the assault happened about 8:05 a.m. near the southern entrance to the Acropolis archaeological site, opposite the Acropolis Museum and ticket booths.

Police said the victims’ injuries were not life-threatening. Reports differed on the exact wounds, but officials said the man suffered the more serious injury and the woman a lighter one before both were taken to a hospital in Athens.

Authorities said a witness alerted police after seeing a man with a knife threatening passersby near the site. DIAS motorcycle officers and an EKAV ambulance responded, gave first aid and detained the suspect at the scene.

Police said the motive was not immediately clear. AP reported the man was expected to appear before a prosecutor later Tuesday, and some reports said officers were also looking into possible mental-health issues, though police did not confirm a motive.
