SAN FELIPE, Venezuela, June 25 (World Daily Times) — The U.S. Geological Survey said two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela 39 seconds apart Wednesday evening, setting off rescue operations and damage in Caracas as officials reported at least 32 deaths and more than 700 injuries.
The USGS said the quakes measured 7.2 and 7.5 and were centered near San Felipe and Yumare. Reports from Venezuelan officials and local responders said buildings were damaged or collapsed in the capital and that crews were searching through debris.
Delcy Rodríguez, a senior Venezuelan official, declared a state of emergency after the quakes and later said dozens of buildings had collapsed. She said rescue workers were carrying out intense search operations.
A single final casualty count was not immediately available from officials. Rodríguez said at least 32 people were killed and more than 700 were injured.
The USGS PAGER system issued red alerts for the disaster, signaling a high risk of casualties and extensive damage. The agency’s estimate also pointed to major economic losses.
President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that the earthquakes had left “a devastating number of deaths” and that the United States stood ready to help Venezuela. He said he had instructed federal agencies to prepare to move quickly.
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said U.S. officials were in contact with Venezuelan authorities and were mobilizing assistance. Jeremy Lewin, a senior State Department official, said a disaster assistance team and task force had been set up to coordinate search and rescue, medical supplies and humanitarian aid.
