Repeat offender with 98 arrests arrested after Olympia high-speed chase following multi-county retail theft spree

A repeat offender with 98 arrests was caught near Olympia after leading deputies on a dangerous high-speed chase following a multi-county retail theft spree; deputies recovered drugs, stolen merchandise and a custom dashboard bong in the abandoned truck.

  • Repeat offender: Suspect now logged as 98 total arrests after arrest following the chase.
  • High-speed pursuit: Deputies’ audio/video captured speeds topping 100 mph as the pickup raced toward downtown Olympia.
  • Evidence recovered: Thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise plus methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl — and an alleged built-in smoking device in the dashboard.
  • Pending charges: DUI testing warrant obtained; charges expected to include attempting to elude, drug possession and organized retail theft across counties.

The retail theft operation

Deputies say the suspect and an accomplice conducted a coordinated theft spree across multiple counties, stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise. Investigators reported the pair used a tactic of moving stolen bags between retailers to conceal items while entering or leaving different stores, allowing them to transport stolen goods before officers could respond.

Retailers in the region have noted a rise in organized shoplifting rings that employ distraction, coordinated entry and the reuse of retailer bags to mask stolen items. Deputies indicated the merchandise recovered from the pickup represents product from several separate theft incidents; additional theft charges are expected as inquiries continue.

The high-speed chase and police response

Deputies first spotted the suspects’ pickup on Interstate 5 near Olympia and moved to initiate a traffic stop. Before officers could intervene, the driver accelerated and fled, triggering a pursuit. Released body-cam and radio footage captured deputies calling out speeds that exceeded 100 miles per hour as the truck headed toward downtown Olympia.

“Speeds topping 100 mph as the pickup approached downtown,” deputies call out in radio and body-cam audio released by authorities.

Officials made an initial stop attempt but discontinued the pursuit when the vehicle entered city streets and intersections at dangerous speeds. A second attempt as the truck drove toward Lacey was also halted after the vehicle ran red lights and continued near 80 mph — decisions made under department pursuit policies that prioritize public safety.

Apprehension, evidence and safety concerns

Shortly after deputies ended active pursuit, the pickup was located abandoned near College Street. The suspects fled on foot toward a nearby neighborhood and in the direction of an elementary school, prompting an immediate search due to the proximity of children and families. A K9 tracking team located and detained both suspects within minutes; deputies said both were taken into custody at gunpoint.

Inside the vehicle, investigators reported recovering thousands of dollars’ worth of stolen merchandise plus methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl. Deputies also described a custom-built bong embedded in the dashboard — an alleged modification that could allow in-vehicle drug use. Authorities obtained a blood warrant to test the driver for possible DUI.

Criminal background and charges

The primary suspect is described as a four-time convicted felon with dozens of prior convictions and 97 prior arrests before this incident, bringing the new total to 98 arrests. Thurston County charges include attempting to elude police, drug possession and DUI-related offenses; Lewis County prosecutors are expected to file organized retail theft charges when processing is complete. Deputies said the second suspect was transferred to another agency for charges tied to a separate theft case.

Investigative questions and law enforcement challenges

Law enforcement faces persistent questions: how to coordinate across county lines to disrupt retail theft rings, how to prioritize repeat offenders, and how to balance the imperative to apprehend suspects with the need to protect bystanders during high-speed pursuits. Department officials released video to increase transparency about risks encountered and to show why pursuit decisions were constrained by safety protocols.

The incident illustrates broader implications for public safety, retail security and criminal justice policy, including debates on pursuit policies, regional coordination, resource strains and the response to drug-impaired driving.
